the dialtone
our numbers remains the same,
but the space we take up in each other's lives has massively changed
♡
i call you
once, twice, a third time for a good measure
the response remains the same
the way i've memorized your dialtone replacing the way i once had memorized the sound of your voice
♡
you call me
i pick up
you make promises that will latter be forgotten
cut to a moment of impulse
i call you, a test
i want you to remember
make conversation hoping you'll say something
but as we hang up, through my hesitation, i notice
our farewells have never been "i love you"
they've always been "take care"
and i think that speak more volumes than i could ever bring to words

That transition from “I love you” to “take care” says everything. It’s amazing how two polite words can hold so much finality
